Ah, the forever-changing trends of Instagram! With the way the app is constantly evolving, it can be hard to keep up. We all try a range of different techniques and trends in an attempt to build our following, but what actually works and what doesn’t? What should I be paying attention to in order to achieve a successful Instagram account? What factors can affect my visibility on the app?
All are very important questions that need to be answered before you set off on your quest for famed Instagram success. Here are five important aspects that will affect Instagram in 2019…
1. Engagement Drops
You’re happily posting on Instagram, interacting with other users and then all of a sudden…..nothing.
You keep doing the same things you were (successfully) doing previously, but engagement is dropping.
What’s going on, you might ask? Is it just me? The answer, thankfully, is no, you’re not the only one suffering from this drop. Loss of engagement was previously a result of the new Instagram algorithm that was implemented mid-2017 that, since its implementation, has resulted in a decrease of engagement of up to 50%!
A more recent study found that Instagram interactions have dropped by 33% in the past year alone. The percentages of likes and comments are also down by an average of 27% and Instagram video interactions are down by 39%. Users with followers between 1,000 and 100,000 have experienced a decrease of 24-29%. Those with followers greater than 100,000 have experienced a decrease of 36-39%. Why?
There are several reasons for this rapid decline in engagement but mainly: there is too much going on with Instagram at any given time. Between the ever-increasing number of users signing up to Instagram,
2. Becoming ‘Insta-famous’ isn’t really happening so instantly anymore
Remember when it was easy to become instantly
So, what have users been doing to counteract this?
While it may seem tempting to reach out to these companies that promise big things for your Instagram account, there are other options that users can choose that will help with their growth & levels of engagement—without hurting the credibility of the brand you’ve created of yourself. While, yes, it is hard to get there organically, it looks better overall if you grow an authentic and engaged following over time. Real followers get you much further than fake followers.
If you feel like all the effort you’re devoting to your Instagram isn’t giving you the results you deserve, there are other options you can pursue. Capital Models was created for this purpose. It’s an alternative to buying followers and offers organic growth at a natural rate, while continuing to adhere to the daily limits of engagement. Did you know Instagram limits the amount of engagement you’re allowed to have with other accounts per day? If you’re constantly posting, liking or commenting on an Instagram account, this could be flagged by Instagram. We stick to these limits, while still helping to grow and expand your account.

3. Are ‘shadowbans’ real?
What is a ‘shadowban’?, you might be asking. Or, if you know what it is, you might question whether it’s real or just some terrible myth created by bitter Instagram users. One important thing to note first is that there is a difference between shadow-bans and simply just loss of engagement.
A shadowban is the Instagram algorithms way of filtering out accounts that might not comply with Instagram’s terms of service. This means that your account is flagged & can no longer reach the same amount of people as it did before, which naturally has a negative affect on your engagement. As this is done by an algorithm, it sometimes gets it wrong, flagging totally innocent accounts. However, f you experience a loss of engagement, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your account has been shadow-banned. As mentioned, there are several reasons for engagement drops so don’t just assume.
How do you know if you have been shadow-banned? If you are set up as a business account you can simply check your reach and impressions – have these numbers drastically changed? Are you reaching a far smaller audience out of nowhere? If you’re not set up as a business and don’t have any analytics running on the account we advise you get some so you can have raw data to track your progress. In order to truly see if your account has been flagged you need to get a look at how many users are seeing your content. If it turns out there are a decent amount of users seeing your content, then the good news is you haven’t been shadow banned! At least 10% of your followers should be seeing your content.
4. Careful with hashtags
Okay. So, you’ve posted an awesome photo that you really want to stand out and grab attention, not only from your followers, but from potential new followers. You have a few go-to hashtags you have been using to help broaden the reach of your photos. Using the same hashtags on every post however, can in itself cause problems, as Instagram may pick this up as spam.
Another important reason to be careful with your hashtags is because some hashtags have been mysteriously banned on the app. While it may seem silly (as this is where hashtags originally came from), it’s most of the time with good reason. With the increasing number of users, people are using Instagram irresponsibly—even going so far as to add inappropriate images with innocent hashtags. Understandably, Instagram has started taking a harsh approach in response, so be careful with what you hashtag— even innocent seeming hashtags can be banned hashtags & may accidentally get your account flagged!
Instead of relying on hashtags, focus on creating quality content that resonates with your audience, also understanding what works and what doesn’t. Using the same hashtags over and over again may actually decrease visibility; if the hashtag is overused, your content will get lost in a sea of other content, as others have used the same tactic.
So, take care when using hashtags.
5. Why models, influencers, bloggers and even celebs are using growth services
I could give you a longwinded response here, but the short and simple answer for using growth services is because it’s the only way to grow! It has become nearly impossible to do it on your own, unless you have a lot of time on your hands and infinite pools of money (which, while we believe in your dream, is probably not you right now).
Another way would be buying a fake following, but as we all know, this is a very bad idea. Instagram thinks so too, as they are currently doing a great job finding users who spam the app or post inappropriate content (the people who ruin the fun for us!).
But, while there is success in using Instagram as an influencer, blogger or as a celebrity, what about the individuals attempting to make a career out of Instagram as late comers and beginners? We know that engagement is dropping, accounts are being suspended and there is too much content on Instagram to know for sure that your content will be seen by a mass audience anytime soon.
There are other options. The reason why unique services such as ours are allowed on Instagram is because our primary focus is growing an authentic following. We are experts in connecting people on the platform—something that is actually greatly beneficial for both Instagram and its users! We target and interact specifically with users who we feel may be greatly interested in your account and direct them to your page, which they may not have found otherwise.
It is really inportant to understand just how different Instagram is this year, with all the changes that have occurred. Capital Models can expertly stay in sync with any updates or trends 2019 throws at you, and we aim to keep our clients in the loop.
